- Combined mortar and spice grinder
- Stir and shake the mortar to grind
- Hand forged from recycled cast iron.
Gravitas is a Swedish-made cast iron mortar that utilises the natural weight of cast iron to crush spices to the desired size. The globe-shaped mortar fits in your hand and pounds, crushes and grinds spices using a heavy iron ball that rolls around inside the mortar.
How to use the mortar
Place the iron ball in the mortar and screw on the top. Drop the spices, dried herbs or nuts you wish to grind through the opening in the top. Hold one hand over the opening and then spin or shake the mortar with your hands.Heavy iron ball grinds the spices
The heavy iron ball rolls around inside the mortar and crushes the spices. The contents become more finely ground the longer you spin and shake the mortar.Seasoning straight from the mortar
When you have finished grinding, you can turn the mortar upside down and season your food with the freshly ground spices. The ball blocks most of the opening, allowing only the right amount of spices to slip out of the mortar.Patented design, hand-forged in Sweden
The patented design of the Gravitas mortar is designed by John Andersson and produced by Lursta Cast Iron in the Lyrestad foundry. The mortar is hand-forged in 100% recycled cast iron from locally recycled metal. The cast iron is then fired with three layers of locally produced, certified and cold-pressed rapeseed oil.Care instructions
Unscrew the two parts and remove the iron ball. Rinse the mortar with warm water only and be careful to wipe it dry afterwards to prevent the iron from rusting. The mortar benefits from regular lubrication with a thin layer of vegetable oil, such as rapeseed oil. Clean the mortar immediately after use.Specifications
